The Instant Team: Meet Rick

At the heart and soul of Instant is a small team of passionate & hardworking individuals that execute at immense speed. Joining us as our Head of Sales 8 months ago, Rick is also our resident coffee connoisseur, DJ (UE Boom controller), and provider of unmatched energy to not just our sales function, but to our entire team.


What do you do at Instant?

I am the Head of Sales. Prior to this, I was working at Zip, also in a Sales role.


Why did you choose to work at Instant?

I’ve always enjoyed getting on the ground floor at startups and building them. Especially in sales where it’s incredibly important to bring on and onboard merchants - it’s definitely the toughest selling to do, but it’s also the most rewarding. I wanted to come into something where I could establish processes, bringing my knowledge in payments and in tech.


What makes this the toughest type of selling to do?

It’s an unknown brand and nobody’s heard of Instant (yet). One-click check-out is definitely a newer technology in the market. Not only are we educating people on who we are, but also what we do. It’s not completely synonymous with e-commerce just yet. It’s also about building trust. Why would brands trust us to process their payments, especially being one of the most important components of running an e-commerce business.


Coming in [to Instant], there were no sales people, team, and very little sales had been done. I didn’t come into this role with pre-existing verticals in place. I had to come in and figure out what things worked and what things didn’t.


What have you done within your time at Instant that you’re most proud of?

It's been incredibly rewarding to be able to help our merchants achieve better customer experiences. I interact with merchants regularly and simply getting to the roots of their checkout headaches and being able to provide them solutions that improve their checkout flow is very rewarding. At the end of the day, we win when our merchants win so seeing the work in relationship building, through to integration and implementation translate over to our sales and transactions is fantastic.


What’s your favourite thing about working at Instant?

Being able to move at speed. We’re a small team. There’s not a lot of bureaucracy. Being able to sit next to the co-founders day-in-day-out and being given the reigns to make decisions are all really awesome. This is definitely not a dictatorship, they trust me to lead sales and run the sales function to go out and execute. Being able to move, do and change things instantly while being trusted with autonomy and responsibility.


What do you like to do outside of work?

I’m recently married, so I like to hang out with my wife and our dog. I’m also a complete coffee-nut. I have a coffee machine at home, I love having people over and making them coffees, nerding out with my coffee machine, playing around with different milks and coffee beans. Love any sport. Put on sport and I absolutely love it. I love being active and I’m a major foodie. I could talk for days and days (and days, and days...) about restaurants and other foods.


What would you say to someone who wants to work at a startup like Instant?

It’s not for everyone. It’s very fast paced and there’s nowhere to hide. You either deliver or fail - and that’s the reality of it. If you’re looking to come in, have an impact and have a say, to “be a big fish in a small pond”, then this is a 100% for you. I’d say those are the best and worst parts of this.
